COMMERCIAL FLAT CONVERSION | WORTHING

This flat conversion involved converting commercial property to residential use within a Grade II listed building. Built in the 18th century, this historic landmark in Worthing town centre had once been the Victoria Inn, before more recently becoming a shop. Now, the converted building still houses a retail area but with the addition of three new modern apartments that occupy what was unused storage space before the property change of use.

Working with our commercial client we went about designing the flat conversion to be in accordance with its Grade II listed status. We collaborated closely with the listed planning department to ensure that the individual character of the building was respected and that the exterior of the property conversion remained in keeping with its historical features. To this end, the roof was replaced with original slates and all new roof windows were of a heritage style whilst still being fully electric and fitted with rain sensors. Street facing timber windows were made by our master craftsmen to an almost identical standard to the existing. Internally, we created large bright spaces by re-establishing the vaulted ceilings. By combining these with clean sharp plastered walls we maximized on the period building’s fantastic design. The existing steel framework was kept exposed and enhanced with LED lighting and mirrors to create bold architectural features. The three apartments were fitted with made-to-measure kitchens that were finished with all modern appliances. Beautiful, clean, bright bathrooms completed our sympathetic flat conversion.

R.J.Steele Building Contractors carried out every part of this conversion of commercial property to residential flats – from electrics, plumbing and carpentry, through to kitchen fitting and decorating.

Undertaking work within listed buildings will almost always require listed building consent from the local planning department and will require a Contractor and Architect with a clear understanding of period construction techniques and how to sympathetically and safely alter the existing structure.
